What's the idea behind this board?

A mid-length with a high-performance theme. A performance tail with more surface area in the nose for catching waves.

For a mid-length, it goes through every turn with power: solid top-to-bottom surfing.

What was considered in the design?

Fundamentally: making a customer happy, and then the realization that the board would likely suit a whole group of surfers.

Where might it compromise?

I actually see no compromises with this board, except on the surfer's side: it works best for capable surfers. You need to be able to weave up and down the wave; if your style is to just stand and go straight, a flatter mid-length makes more sense. And perhaps in super soft, flat waves: extra rocker never likes those.

Shape details and design info

OUTLINE: Performance bump squash tail, fuller nose for easy paddling.

RAILS: Rails that melt completely into your hands. Low with a beautiful curve, a slightly more tucked rail in the tail, and just a refined feel along the entire length. The type of rail I normally put on a pro's board.

The low rail also maintains a pleasant amount of flex in the board.

ROCKER: The rocker is essentially stolen from a Banana longboard. It still works on something soft and has enough paddle power, but if that longboard can go top to bottom, then this board can too. So it has a good amount of rocker compared to other mid-lengths, which allows for more vertical surfing and surfing in the pocket.

BOTTOM: Flat bottom. The goal is maximum speed. SUNOVA's unique flexible bottom adds an extra level of performance, making the boards less dependent on bottom contours anyway.

DECK: Not much to say. Looks good with wax on it.

FIN SETUP: Thruster, no doubt. My preference for now, although I'm sure someone will ask for a different fin setup.

FINALLY: A high-performance mid-length that is perfect for surfers with a shortboard background, or for longboarders who want to transition completely to a shortboard. A joy to ride.

Construction - Paraflex

Paraflex is SUNOVA's premium performance construction. Developed over the past five years in the relentless pursuit of perfect performance, it is used for all surfboards under 8'.

Paraflex is designed to provide more spring and rebound in shorter boards than its predecessor, Balsaflex. This results in a positive, more flexible flex pattern when the board is loaded and unloaded through sections. The boards flex into the pocket and spring back predictably, allowing them to shoot out of sections with great speed and life. A lightweight EPS core is combined with a 1/2" balsa/composite parabolic rail, which is then laid between balsa skins top and bottom. The result is unparalleled resilience.

The bottom consists of a 1.5mm paulownia/fiberglass sandwich that is not fully rigid. This softer section dampens the ride, making the board remarkably impervious to chop and ensuring a smooth ride even in choppy, average conditions. The deck is a 2mm paulownia/fiberglass sandwich with highlighted mini I-beams connecting the glass below the wood to the glass above. This forms a very rigid, strong sandwich construction that is exceptionally resistant to denting and feels solid and responsive under your feet.

Finished with solid balsa/composite nose and tail blocks for extra ding resistance, these boards look even better than they perform. They feature a self-regulating vent with a slightly permeable Goretex membrane in a special aluminum housing, designed and engineered by TBF. Paraflex boards are functional and progressive.
