What were you thinking about during the design process?

The goal was to create a longboard that is the ultimate performance noserider. Something you can surf with traditional style and grace, with many features that keep you in the front third of the board. But also something you can run back to the tail to attack a critical section when the opportunity arises.

What does it potentially compromise on?

No compromises. This board has many design elements that are well integrated. A lot is happening in the shape, but it works as a whole. If there's one thing: this board doesn't like messy conditions.

Shape details and design info

OUTLINE: Full nose, parallel outline, rounded pin. Surface in the nose always helps with noseriding, especially at lower speeds when you lean on that surface to plane over the water. The parallel outline maintains a straighter line while walking and noseriding, while the rounded pin provides squirt and excellent control from the tail, allowing you to place the board exactly where you want it.

RAILS: Super low, 50/50 through the middle with hard edges out of the tail. The fine, low rail makes it easier to initiate a turn, but the key is the super soft bottom: it allows the water to wrap around the rail and flow over the deck. Water on the deck stabilizes the board and locks it better into the wave face, making it feel stable for walking and noseriding. A harder edge in the tail provides release and gives the board squirt and projection from your back foot.

ROCKER: Flatter nose entry to a performance tail rocker. The flatter nose helps with paddle power and carrying speed into the wave, and ensures the board continues to track better on the nose and maintain momentum even as the wave slows down. The extra tail rocker is added for two reasons. Firstly, many features of the board make it stiffer and harder to turn; the tail rocker compensates for this and loosens it up again. Secondly, a good noserider needs to slow down when you are on the nose, so you stay in the curl of the wave. Nose rocker, extra rocker in general, or extra tail rocker slows a board down. The goal is to slow down the tail so it drags water, instead of slowing down the nose so it pushes water away.

BOTTOM: Concave to roll, flat out of the tail. The concave in the nose helps generate lift while you are all the way forward, keeping you high and dry, while the roll through the middle makes the board super stable to walk on. The flat tail gives the board a lot of release and makes it lightning fast when surfing from the tail.

DECK: Rolled. Not much happening here besides thickness distribution. With the nose and tail being quite refined, the swing weight is reduced, and the board maintains a sensitive feel.

FIN SETUP: 2+1. The larger center fin creates a more stable platform for walking and also holds a cleaner, more direct line during noserides. As you walk, the board tends to wobble from rail to rail if you don't walk perfectly and lightly over the center. The deeper fin counteracts that wobbling feeling and keeps the board flat and stable. The side bites help initiate turns for more efficient directional changes.

CLOSING REMARKS: This board is performance and style in one package. If you want a board that allows you to hang ten very well up front and still hit heavier sections that you can attack with speed, this is it.

Construction - Paraflex

Paraflex is SUNOVA's premium performance construction. Developed over the past five years from an unrelenting pursuit of perfect performance, it is the top construction for all surfboards under 8'.

Paraflex is designed to provide more spring and rebound in shorter boards than its predecessor, Balsaflex. This results in a more positive, flexible flex pattern as the board loads and unloads through sections. The boards flex deep into the pocket, rebound predictably, and shoot out of a section with great speed and life. A lightweight EPS core is combined with a ½" parabolic balsa/composite rail, sandwiched between balsa skins on the top and bottom. This provides unparalleled spring and rebound.

The bottom is a 1.5mm Paulownia/fiberglass sandwich that is not entirely rigid. This softer section underneath dampens the ride and makes the board remarkably insensitive to chatter, so you can continue to surf smoothly even in choppy, mediocre conditions. The deck is a 2mm Paulownia/fiberglass sandwich with highlighted mini I-beams connecting the glass under the wood to the glass above. This creates a very stiff, strong sandwich structure that is highly resistant to indentations and feels solid and responsive underfoot.

Finished with solid balsa/composite nose and tail blocks for extra ding resistance, these boards look even better than they perform. They feature a self-regulating air vent with a lightly permeable Goretex membrane in a special aluminum valve, designed and developed by TBF. This makes Paraflex boards functional and progressive.

After Firewire, Bert returned to SUNOVA and joined Martin and Klaus to further his vision and push the boundaries of watercraft design. Martin and Klaus are perfect partners with their extensive experience in production, R&D, and sales: Martin honed his skills previously at Cobra International, the world's largest surfboard manufacturer, and Klaus comes from the automotive industry.

The Board Factory (TBF) is the home of SUNOVA Surfboards, the place where the brand designs, innovates, and plays.
