WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND THE DESIGN?
The goal was a fish that a high-performance shortboarder would enjoy. It took five versions to get it right, so now there's a versatile board that can even serve as an everyday shortboard.

WHERE DOES IT FALL SHORT?
The retro fish purist will likely say it doesn't have enough glide and lacks that traditional retro feel.

OUTLINE
Fuller nose, tight outline to a wide moontail. The Moonfish's outline is deceptive: at first glance, it looks fuller and more parallel, but in reality, a high-performance shortboard outline was taken, 6 inches were removed from the nose and tail, the nose was blended back in, and the tail remained a wide moon. When you pump down the line and put it on rail, the arc of the turn feels like performance, while the wide moon provides masses of drive and acceleration: all that surface propels you from nothing as soon as you get on your back foot.

RAILS
Slightly fuller, with a tucked edge to the tail. The rails are slightly fuller but pinch off a bit, bringing the apex closer to the bottom and allowing the rail to sink into a turn more easily. The bottom edge at the front has a distinct bevel, as it's a small wave board that needs to skate over the water. The tail rail has a slight tuck, giving you a bit more warning before it drifts. It's also very fine, so it cuts through the water with minimal resistance and sinks nicely deep. That gives grip and control to a board that would otherwise be a bit slippery.

ROCKER
Medium, slightly flatter. With this rocker, the board carries well in waves, maintains its speed over dead sections, and catches waves easily. It carries well through cutbacks on weaker sections and easily goes into a tail drift.

BOTTOM
Single concave. A problem with very wide tails and boards is that they are harder to get on rail. With a wide tail, the transition from rail to rail feels smooth, and it is precisely there that you can end up in an uncontrollable drift when turning under the lip at speed. First one rail catches, then there is a brief moment where the board is flat before the other rail catches. With the concave, you have first set one rail, and the other bites immediately at the transition, which gives a much more positive feel.

DECK
The deck has a fairly standard profile; the tail tapers nicely and gets nice and thin. That compensates for the amount of surface area, so you can still bury the tail in the lip when you throw it into a tight turn.

FINS (not included)
5 fins. For top-to-bottom surfing, the thruster is the better choice. If the waves get steeper and faster, switch to the quad to maintain a higher, more direct line. If the waves are flatter and more open, with little chance of top-to-bottom surfing, the quad is also an option.
