    Description

The LOOSE JUICE is the all-around board from Sunova's Christian Fletcher line. This beast has such bizarre contours and curves that it makes you question everything you know. The board features a super deep concave across the entire bottom and a relatively straight outline, allowing it to go fast down the line while remaining loose and agile from the tail. It's also not afraid to fly. As a one-board quiver, the Loose Juice does not disappoint.

    About the board

    GENERAL PURPOSE | BOARD THEME
All-round performance board, with maximum comfort in mind.

WAVE TYPE ||| SIZE IT WORKS BEST IN
Everyday conditions. From just under hip-high to double overhead.

    MANEUVERS IT DOES BEST
Boosting, sticking landings, and throwing a lot of tail out of the lip.

    LEVEL IT'S BEST SUITED FOR
Beginner to pro, especially older surfers who enjoy a beer.

    PADDLE POWER
    Above average.

    WHAT WAS THE DESIGN IDEA?
The design did not originate from Sunova itself. When Christian Fletcher sent the original design file, the shaper's initial reaction was pure astonishment. After reviewing all the extreme features, it became clear that it was a balanced design where one characteristic compensates for another, but all questions were only answered after building and surfing the first one.

That happened in March 2014 in Sri Lanka. After three sessions, the board was fully understood, and it became clear how each variable contributed to its performance. Christian, who was also there, heard this explanation and said no other shaper had ever explained it so clearly. Christian knows exactly what he wants, but a second shaper was needed to break it down into simple, explainable principles. Six years later, and although it's a few inches larger than the original, the shaper still rides it as an all-around shortboard. That says it all about this board.

    WHERE DOES IT EXCEL?
It finds its own speed. If the wave is weak and you pump aggressively, it needs two or three pumps to get going. It likes waves with a drop on the take-off.

Summary of shape details | design info

    OUTLINE
Wider, fuller nose, tighter and more parallel through the middle, to a round tail with plenty of surface area. The wider nose provides extra paddle power because it climbs easily on top of the water, the straighter mid-section maintains speed down the line, and the tail has masses of surface area to float from. That also gives a nice push on the take-off, and the full round tail still sets a tight hook from your back foot when you use those last 6 inches of curve while leaning hard on rail.

    RAILS
Step rails: more meat on the shoulder, very fine at the edges. The front rail is soft and tucked as usual; from middle to tail, there's more tuck than normal, blending into a hard edge in the tail. The rails act like training wheels: it's very difficult to make mistakes on this board. The thin rails bite super fast and grab the turn, deep enough for hold, while you can't over-turn because the thicker shoulder doesn't sink too far. The generous tuck in the bottom edge helps the board stick when landing airs. As Christian says: hard bottom edges behave like a skipping stone.

    ROCKER
Generally much flatter than a board with comparable performance: perhaps 1/4" to 3/8" less in the tail and certainly 1" less in the nose. The flatter rocker carries through very well, paddles great, and maintains speed surprisingly well without needing to pump. The best thing about this rocker is the extra time it gives you to get to your feet. On highly rockered boards, you lose a fast wave if your feet don't land exactly right, but on the Loose Juice, the board just carries through, and you have time to adjust.

    BOTTOM
Concave, concave, and more concave. This board truly has the deepest concave you'll ever see in a board. From nose to tail: as soon as you lean slightly to initiate a turn, the rails fully engage and it changes direction.

    DECK
Concave and even more concave. Concave in the nose, in the chest area, and very deep under your front foot, blending into a flat deck under your back foot. If you enjoy a beer and normally struggle to lie on your board for long, this is wonderfully comfortable. When you pop up, your front foot finds the right spot, but the most important thing is the leverage you get when you lean into a turn. The rails engage much deeper than on a standard board with the same effort and body angle. Another interesting point is the volume in the tail. Shapers often say they add more volume under the chest for easier paddling and wave catching, but if the front floats, the tail sinks. That's how kooks paddle. When catching a wave, the wave actually lifts the tail, so that tail volume launches you nicely into the take-off.

    FINS (not included)
5 fins. Originally designed by Christian as a quad, but with a 5-fin setup, you can ride it just as well as a thruster.

    Final words

Important to note: this board is a complete package. Surfboard design is about balance, where every feature works with the rest but also compensates for each other. If every feature in a board was about speed, it wouldn't turn; if everything was about turns, it wouldn't go. So features are weighed against each other: some for turns, some for speed, so you get something in the middle.
