What is the idea behind this board?

To create a good-looking, functional, yet simple design, with good carry and speed down the line, and with the right fins, good grip in turns.

In what wave type and wave size does this board work best?

Open waves that run down the line. Whether the wave is steep or flatter, both are fine. Not ideal for bowly, top-to-bottom waves, but good in stretched-out waves where you need to connect sections.

Typical wave range: hip height to a few feet overhead.

What maneuvers work best on this board?

Tight arcs, smooth roundhouse cutbacks, and stylish trimming.

What level is this board for?

From beginner to pro.

How is the paddling ability?

Well above average for its volume.

What was considered in the design?

The goal was to create a functional yet beautiful board. As a shaper, I don't ride everything I design; I still have my own preferences. For example, I never felt the need to play with twin fins. Of course, I rode them in the seventies and then quads in the eighties, and shaped a custom here and there. It just never was the style of surfing I wanted to pursue, so this model is truly inspired by dedicated twin fin riders: relying on the feel they seek and then making it look good.

Where might it fall short?

It's a twin fin, which offers a certain ride and feel, nothing more.

Shape details and design info

OUTLINE: Super clean outline. Slightly fuller nose, more parallel, a straighter curve from the tail, combined with a deep swallow tail. This translates into a smooth feel on rail, easy wave catching, and good grip in your bottom turns.

RAILS: The board is generally not thick, so the flatness of the deck extends slightly into the rail, but the rails feel fine: thin and refined in your hands. A classic tucked under edge at the front, transitioning to a hard edge in the tail towards the back.

ROCKER: I would classify it as mid-to-low rocker. It paddles and glides well, but still has enough curve to fit the wave. A slight optical illusion: due to the limited thickness, the board appears to have more rocker than it actually does.

BOTTOM: Flat bottom. SUNOVA's unique flexible bottom adds an extra level of performance, making the boards less dependent on bottom contours. The parabolic rail also provides grip and rebound that you don't get with other constructions. The result is an extremely fast board that can still fit into tight spots when you engage it.

DECK: The deck has a fairly standard profile; because the board is a bit thinner, the volume is proportionately brought to the rails, and the deck is comfortably flatter.

FIN SETUP: Twin setup. My recommendation is a good set of keels, or the raked Drivers that I discuss in the video. I do not recommend an upright fin.

FINALLY: A classic twin fin shape in SUNOVA's unique construction: just give it a try.

Construction - Paraflex

Paraflex is SUNOVA's premium performance construction. It has been developed over the past five years in the continuous pursuit of perfect performance and is used for all surfboards under 8'.

Paraflex is designed to give shorter boards more rebound and snap than its predecessor, Balsaflex. This results in a positive, more flexible flex pattern when the board is loaded and unloaded through sections. The boards flex into the pocket and rebound predictably, allowing them to shoot out of sections with great speed and life. A lightweight EPS core is combined with a 1/2" balsa/composite parabolic rail, which is then laid between balsa skins top and bottom. The result is unparalleled rebound.

The bottom consists of a 1.5mm paulownia/fiberglass sandwich that is not entirely rigid. This softer part dampens the ride, making the board remarkably insensitive to chop and allowing for a smooth ride even in choppy, average conditions. The deck is a 2mm paulownia/fiberglass sandwich with highlighted mini I-beams that connect the glass under the wood to the glass above. This forms a very stiff, strong sandwich construction that is exceptionally resistant to denting and feels solid and responsive underfoot.

Finished with solid balsa/composite nose and tail blocks for extra ding resistance, these boards look even better than they perform. They feature a self-regulating vent with a lightly permeable Goretex membrane in a special aluminum housing, designed and engineered by TBF. Paraflex boards are functional and progressive.
