What is the general purpose or theme of the board?

A traditional-style all-round longboard, designed for maximum lift during nose rides at lower speeds and plenty of acceleration in turns from your back foot. An all-round playful high-performance board that screams for traditional lines.

What wave type and size does this board work best in?

Most softer wave types, down the line, and open waves. From just below knee-high to one and a half times overhead. If it gets bigger, the wave just needs to be softer and slower.

What maneuvers does this board do best?

Smooth cross-stepping, long hang tens on the nose, and fast, sharp turns from the tail.

What were you thinking about during the design process?

The goal was to be able to surf like Joel Tudor: smooth and easy to walk on, stable underfoot, yet free and surfable. Bert traditionally loved high-performance longboards, essentially large shortboards with a longboard nose, not ideal for critical long nose rides on softer waves. He eventually became interested in logs himself and quickly wanted to learn what makes a good log. It took at least twelve attempts before this design was achieved.

No compromises, just ride it in the right waves.

Shape details and design info

OUTLINE: The widest point is pulled back, creating a longer, straighter section in the nose outline that maintains a nice line during nose rides. This is combined with a wide tail with plenty of curve in the outline behind it, to hook short turns from the tail.

RAILS: Super thin, refined rails throughout the length, no hard edge anywhere. The soft bottom invites the water to run over the deck, causing the board to lock in for better nose rides. The thin rail cuts effortlessly through the water with minimal resistance at take-off.

ROCKER: Standard rocker, a very even curve with accelerated tail rocker. Super smooth and playful to surf from the middle of the board. The tail rocker allows for easy turning and, in combination with maximum suction or a low-pressure area just behind the fin, provides plenty of power to pull the tail down during nose rides.

BOTTOM: Concave in the nose, transitioning into a rolled midsection and back to a concave tail. The nose concave provides good grip and hold on the face during nose rides, the rolled midsection makes walking smoother, and the concave tail provides some squirt and acceleration when you initiate a rail turn from your back foot.

DECK: The deck has a bit more roll due to the very fine rails. Also noticeable is the tail rocker incorporated into the deck line, creating downward pressure as the water is directed upwards when exiting the tail.

FIN SETUP: Single fin. Try a few and experiment; Bert himself hasn't played with this on this board yet, so no fin recommendations from him.

FINAL WORD: A classic-looking traditional longboard with many interesting features. A truly unique feel. Extremely fun and an excellent nose rider.

Construction - Paraflex

Paraflex is SUNOVA's premium performance construction. Developed over the past five years through an relentless pursuit of perfect performance, this construction is the top choice for all surfboards under 8'.

Paraflex is designed to provide more spring and rebound in shorter boards than its predecessor, Balsaflex. This results in a more positive, flexible flex pattern as the board is loaded and unloaded through sections. The boards flex deep into the pocket, spring back predictably, and shoot out of a section with great speed and life. A lightweight EPS core is combined with a 1/2" parabolic balsa/composite rail, sandwiched between balsa skins on the top and bottom. This provides unparalleled spring and rebound.

The bottom is a 1.5mm Paulownia/fiberglass sandwich that is not completely rigid. This softer bottom section dampens the ride and makes the board remarkably insensitive to chatter, allowing for smooth surfing even in choppy, mediocre conditions. The deck is a 2mm Paulownia/fiberglass sandwich with highlighted mini I-beams connecting the glass under the wood to the glass above. This creates a very stiff, strong sandwich structure that is particularly resistant to impressions and feels solid and responsive underfoot.

Finished with solid balsa/composite nose and tail blocks for extra ding resistance, these boards look even better than they perform. They feature a self-regulating air vent with a slightly permeable Goretex membrane in a special aluminum valve, designed and developed by TBF. This makes Paraflex boards functional and innovative.
