WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND THE DESIGN?
This model is based on the original Clone, which was essentially a copy of one of Taj's favorites and similar to what most pro surfers were riding at the time. Over the past decade, board lengths have shortened, so Sunova wanted a board that follows the latest direction in board design without compromising performance. The board has low volume for its surface area but carries the volume it has all the way through the rails. This allows it to stick well to the face for its width during late drops, thanks to the softer, rounder bottom edge at the front and the tuck in the tail.

WHERE DOES IT COMPROMISE THEN?
Nowhere really: this is just a strong small wave board. If anything, the volume has been reduced to the absolute minimum. This is a deliberate choice so that people who only choose a board by volume cannot accidentally pick one that is too small. The recommended rider weights are calculated based on surface area and the ability to plane in slow waves and while pumping. If you choose the board that fits your size, the volume will be roughly what an average pro rides in proportion to their body weight.

OUTLINE
Tight arc with squash tail. Looking at the plan shape, you'll see an outline with a relatively tight arc from nose to tail. From the first pump or the first bottom turn, the board is very sensitive and initiates turns immediately. It pumps very freely and easily and goes effortlessly top to bottom. The squash, with a slightly straighter outline from the fins back, wants to drift a bit sooner than, for example, the Nitro. This gives you strong top-to-bottom performance with tight, clean lines and allows you to close tight re-entries with a subtle waft.

RAILS
Low volume, but angled. A low-volume rail gives good feel when initiating a turn, but very sharp rails often force you into a tight tuck in the bottom edge. The Clone has a fairly full, rounded bottom rail with the apex closer to the deck. In the tail, the bottom edge is significantly tucked. This combination provides good grip on the face during a late, sucking drop or a high-speed attack. The tucked edge in the tail gives a lot of control during sideways and backward drifts and is less likely to catch a rail, which would cause the board to flip out from under you.

ROCKER
Full performance tail rocker, with a slightly flatter nose entry. With this amount of rocker, the board stays loose and super sensitive and fits into tight pockets, allowing you to attack sections at speed. The slightly flatter nose carries better in small waves without pushing water.

BOTTOM
Single concave. No nonsense about water being channeled to the tail or lift being generated. The concave ensures that the inner rail grips sooner, initiating turns faster, and simultaneously directs water away from the outer rail: Newton's third law in practice.

DECK
Flatter than standard. The deck is quite flat due to the low volume and the fuller, more angled rail. This provides comfort and a slightly quicker reaction time when initiating turns.

FINS (not included)
Thruster. For top-to-bottom surfing, the thruster is always the better choice.

A strong high-performance small wave board for advanced surfers that does not disappoint. Note: Sunova recommends this board for advanced to pro surfers. If you cannot generate speed yourself by pumping, this is not the right board for you.
