The Lost Surfboard brand started in 1985 with the now legendary shaper Matt Biolos and a group of school friends. Together they formed 'team-Lost' in which they practiced various sports such as snowboarding on Mt. Baldy, skateboarding in Upland and surfing in Dana Point. Team Lost scribbled their name on books, shirts and tables and eventually a clothing brand was born.

In 1987, Lost Head Shaper Matt Biolos started sanding surfboards, having just finished high school. Lost used the name "Mayhem" as an ode to the second model he ever shaped. Matt 'Mayhem' Biolos shaped 20 boards in his first year. Not many people ordered boards from 'Mayhem' yet, so to earn money, he continued sandblasting surfboards and started designing handwritten designs. Surfers like Christian Fletcher and Matt Archbold received paint commissions. By collaborating with some big names in the Californian scene, such as Timmy Patterson, Jim Fuller, Terry Senate and Randy Sleigh, and receiving a lot of feedback from top surfers, his shaping ability was able to develop and from there, Lost grew into a worldwide phenomenon.
