Description
A collaborative tri-fin project from Matt Biolos and the artistic, innovative South African handshaper, Donald Brink, now based in San Clemente. The motivation for the project came from Stab’s Electric Acid Surfboard test, where the original asymmetrical shape had a 5’3” size restriction and was meant for the varying waves in the Maldives. The boys, knowing Mick’s power, skill, and refined board knowledge, created a craft that would hit his volume sweet spot while providing maximum horsepower, railing well through proper arcs, fitting into tight pockets, and utilizing both flat faces and power sections…they won! For our symmetrical version, they went down to 5’4” as a base size and added a 5’6”, 5’8”, 5’10” and 6’ to open the doors for everyday surfers like us, who might want a bit more volume and paddle power, but still want that mix of spontaneous freedom and power on rail that the board was meant to manifest. Designed to be finned as a thruster and effectively much shorter than your standard shortboard (even your fish), pick a volume you can be comfortable with and challenge yourself to fit into new parts of the wave like Mick did.
Real-world experience cheat code: It surfs truly “fish-sized” in small surf.
While Donald and our crew have experimented with surfing bigger sizes/volumes of the Micks Tape in small to mid-size surf, it has proven to be a magically fast, loose performance groveler that rips as a thruster or in tri-fin variations in low to average energy waves.
For significant size waves, keep it true to the original design proposition and ride it as short as you can paddle...
