This shape still carries the hybrid DNA Rob is known for, but it’s the closest thing to a high-performance shortboard he’s ever made. The Groove’s rocker and tail template bring this shape back into the world of “high-performance surfing,” where you can come off the bottom tight and go straight up the lip.
Rob added more rocker than his usual shapes, with a tail rocker that keeps you tight in the pocket and an increased nose rocker to allow you to come off the lip with control without catching your nose.
The Groove is a rediscovery of the high-performance thruster, but with a twist in the outline: extra width and thickness at the front for better paddle-ability, combined with a tight, pulled-in squash tail for ultimate shred-ability.

"I designed it for waves with some push and power, from waist-high to overhead. But it also works well in weaker waves—I just wouldn't call it a true groveler."
For that true old-school high-performance vibe, the Machado Groove Fin Set is a must. If you want a twist in smaller surf, you can also surf it with the Machado 2 + 1 template.

A stringerless EPS core with flex controlled in the rails, made from Paulownia and Balsa wood—this construction is light and lively underfoot, generating speed effortlessly in everyday waves.
