Aipa Dark Twinn - Dual Core - FCS II - 3 Fin - Shortboard
Description
The Dark Twinn was developed as part of Aipa's Dark Series: a range of new designs, inspired by Ben Aipa's classic shapes and modernized for futuristic surfing. The Dark Twinn combines Ben's Wing Twin template, which produced Dane Kealoha's twin fins in the late 70s and 90s, with an updated Swing Twin Squash template for a modern feel.
The shifted placement of the wings activates the relationship between wing and fin and emphasizes how the board behaves as a twin fin. With mid-range rockers and a lowered rail apex line, the Dark Twinn is a high-performance groveler, built for aggressive surfing in weak waves.
The bottom features a phased construction: a rolled nose that blends into a single concave under your front foot, transitioning into a double concave that is deepest between the front fins. From the wing, that concave blends with a significant dose of vee/double-concave, which gradually tapers towards the tail.
The Dark Twinn is a lively and responsive board that has proven itself from the mush of Pismo Beach to powerful Hawaiian waves.
Construction - Dual Core
A board that combines the best of EPS and PU surfboards. Where EPS is lively, PU inserts dampen vibrations better. The result is pop out of your turns and stability when you're on rail. With Dual Core construction, you never have to compromise again.
- FUSED CELL EPS CORE (DUAL-CORE W/PU RAILS) // Closed cell EPS core provides more response and buoyancy
- CLEAR HD-EPOXY RESIN // High thermo-mechanical performance epoxy resin
- HIGH-QUALITY E-GLASS FIBERGLASS // E-glass has the highest strength-to-weight ratio available
- FULL BIAX DECK PATCH (45° / -45°) // The Biax fiberglass distributes forces and protects against dings
- POP-FLEX STRINGER (TPU) // TPU adds pop and feel / EVA provides damping and feel
- PU FOAM RAIL INSERTS (DUAL-CORE W/EPS CENTER) // PU rails provide drive in and out of your turns and swing weight for airs
- CARBON STRINGER // Distributes forces. Protects against dings. Adds break strength
- CARBON TAIL PATCHES // Distributes forces to the fins and protects against dings at the toe and heel
- PATENTED TECHNOLOGY // An exclusive technology from Surftech
Fin(s) included: None
A Legacy of Aloha
Ben Aipa left one of the most significant marks on the surfing world: he made the board that fellow Hawaiian Fred Hemmings used to win the world championship in 1968 and founded his own brand, Aipa Surfboards, in 1970. In 1972, Ben conceived the double-edged swallowtail design, followed by the split-tail design in 1974. He also informally coached and trained top surfers such as Michael Ho, Larry Bertleman, Mark Liddell, Sunny Garcia, Brad Gerlach, and Kalani Robb.
Ben Aipa continued to compete himself: he won the Grandmasters division of the United States Surfing Championship in 1989 and the Legends division of the U.S. Championships in 2000. In 1992, he was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame, and in 2004, Surfing magazine named him one of the Top Ten Shapers of All-Time. His sons Duke and Akila now carry on his legacy with fresh shapes and new ideas.
I never looked at what other board builders were doing... I looked at the surfers and the nature around me. Their movements showed me what was missing... I was always looking for the next wave, the next move. - Ben Aipa
