Aipa Big Brother Sting - Fusion HD - FCS II - 4 + 1 Fin - Longboard
Description
Big boards equal big fun for big riders. The Big Brother Sting is Ben Aipa's dedicated longboard: a high-performance tank that powers through the weakest conditions. Extra thickness in the board's centre, combined with a beautifully foiled rail, strikes the perfect balance between buoyancy and performance. You'll catch every wave without sacrificing agility. A wider outline towards the nose increases stability, and a pulled-in tail allows for quick changes of direction. The iconic AIPA wing connects the front of the board, where buoyancy and stability dominate, with the back, where big turns and precise control are possible. To keep the overall weight down, Surftech builds the Big Brother Sting in Fusion HD construction: a light, durable epoxy with lively flex. Fun is guaranteed with the Big Brother Sting; finally, a board that makes less-than-ideal conditions as enjoyable as the best day of the year.
Construction - Fusion HD
Surftech's variation on a standard EPS and epoxy surfboard construction. A closed-cell EPS core with a wooden stringer is laminated with E-glass and biax glass, creating a lightweight performance board with a lively feel. All Fusion HD boards are hand-finished.
- FUSED CELL EPS CORE // Closed-cell EPS core provides more response and buoyancy
- CLEAR HD-EPOXY RESIN // Epoxy resin system with high thermo-mechanical performance
- HIGH-QUALITY E-GLASS FIBERGLASS // E-glass has the highest strength-to-weight ratio available
- FULL BIAX DECK PATCH (45° / -45°) // The biax fibreglass distributes forces and protects against dings
- WOOD STRINGER // Distributes forces, provides pop, and increases break strength
- FCS II FIN BOXES // Installing and removing fins takes only a few seconds
- HAND-FINISHED // Machine shaped, hand-laminated, and hand-finished
Fins included: None
A Legacy of Aloha
Ben Aipa left one of the biggest marks on the surfing world: he shaped the board with which fellow Hawaiian Fred Hemmings won the world championship in 1968 and founded his own brand, Aipa Surfboards, in 1970. In 1972, Ben conceived the double-edged swallowtail design, following it up in 1974 with the split-tail design. He was also the informal coach and trainer for top surfers like Michael Ho, Larry Bertleman, Mark Liddell, Sunny Garcia, Brad Gerlach, and Kalani Robb.
Ben Aipa continued to compete himself: he won the Grandmasters division of the United States Surfing Championship in 1989 and the Legends division of the U.S. Championships in 2000. In 1992, he was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame, and in 2004, Surfing magazine named him one of the ten greatest shapers of all time. Under the leadership of sons Duke and Akila, Ben's legacy lives on with fresh shapes and ideas.
"I never looked at what other board builders were doing... I looked at the surfers and the nature around me. Their movements showed me what was missing... I was always looking for the next wave, the next move." – Ben Aipa
