Wetsuit advice
What should you consider when buying a wetsuit? The most important thing to look for is the thickness of the wetsuit. Where do you plan to use it? Is it intended more for winter? Or are you looking for a summer wetsuit? Most wetsuits have long legs and long sleeves and are called 'steamer' or 'fullsuit'. If you look at the thickness of a suit, you'll encounter specifications like 3/2; 4/3; 5/4. These numbers indicate how thick a suit is. Let's take 3/2 as an example. The first number always indicates the thickness of the suit on the body and legs. In our example, it's 3mm. The second number indicates the thickness of the suit on the arms. In our example, it's 2mm.
Why different thicknesses?
Different wetsuit thicknesses exist because surfers surf in different conditions. If it's very cold, you need a thicker wetsuit. If it's warm, you'd prefer to surf with a bit less neoprene.
A 3/2 is the normal summer wetsuit. It is especially suitable for water temperatures of approximately 16-22 degrees.
A 4/3 is a wetsuit for spring and autumn. It is especially suitable for water temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees.
A 5/4: The typical winter suit. Suitable for anything below 10 degrees.
Differences in price:
Each brand has wetsuits with different prices. This ensures they have an option for all customer wishes. The higher the price of a wetsuit, the better the quality and the materials used.
The neoprene:
If neoprene is of higher quality, it means the wetsuit is more flexible and warmer. There are significant differences in price here. So, if you're looking for a wonderfully warm and very flexible wetsuit, you should look at the higher-priced models.
The seams:
Because a wetsuit is not a single piece of neoprene, a suit must, of course, be sewn. Top-of-the-range wetsuits are not just sewn. They are glued and extra sealed with the aim of allowing as little water as possible into the wetsuit. The less water that gets into your wetsuit, the warmer you will be.
Extra features:
Furthermore, wetsuits differ with smaller but nice extra features. For example, you'll find a difference between a chest zip or a back zip. This refers to whether the zipper of the suit is on your chest or on your back. Or are the sleeves and legs taped and sealed with extra rubber to seal the suit better. Almost every suit has kneepads, which provide extra reinforcement around your knee. Some suits also have a key pocket so you don't lose your key while surfing.
